Senior Thesis — Earned Distinction
The role of artificial intelligence in luxury fashion media campaigns. A year-long independent research study in the LSA Communication & Media Senior Thesis & Honors Program at the University of Michigan, advised by Dr. Devon Powers. Earned Distinction.
Abstract
Generative artificial intelligence use has become increasingly common in creative spaces, particularly in digital advertising for luxury fashion. Through a discourse analysis investigation of luxury fashion social media pages, this study researches how the use of generative AI in marketing campaigns affects the consumer relationship to the brand. The results conclude that consumers have a predominantly negative response to clear AI use in fashion campaign imagery. This study argues the presence of AI in luxury fashion campaigns reshapes consumer perception of the brand, primarily by signifying a lack of creativity, authenticity, and effort.
Method
Identified six luxury-to-high-fashion brands accused of using AI on official Instagram and TikTok accounts — Gucci, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Guess, Vogue, and Gentle Monster. Created a synthetic social media account on both platforms to observe. Collected 292 pieces of comment data directly addressing AI use, then analyzed via Discourse Analysis and Thematic Analysis methods.
